The Volkswagen Amarok which means ‘wolf’ in Inuit Eskimo, company’s first venture into the mid-sized utility market promises to introduce class-leading excellence to the marketplace. Company plans to release diesel powered 4 door manual version first. There will be a choice of two engines. 2.0l four cylinder turbo diesel with 120kw/400Nm, and equal in size 90kw/340Nm four cylinder turbo matched to a six speed manual transmission. Both of the engines lack of low power at low revs is quite evident. However, push the engine above 2200rpm and the Amarok will start to deliver exceptional performance all the way to the redline. Automatic transmission is yet to be confirmed. Fuel economy is expected to be around 7.6l/100km for the later variant whilst the more powerful version is expected to consume just 0.2l/100km more. It’s expected for the prices to be released sometime early next year with early assumptions based on already available information to be around 40K. It will go on sale in Europe early next year, however, it is yet to be confirmed for Australian Market. The car will also offer all of the standard safety features such as electronic traction control, ABS, and other breaking systems normally found on any other alternative. Selectable four wheel drive with lockable differentials and a reasonable ground clearance will also be available for off-road uses as part of its optionable feature. The Amarok is comparable in size to its key rivals Nissan Navara, Holden Colorado and the Toyota Hilux, but its more refined design offers more exclusive yet less intense appearance. At first glance one can assume that Front styling of the vehicle has been influenced by smaller vehicles such as Golf or Polo. This is a good think since the overall design of mentioned vehicles has proven to be very popular. Interior of the car can be described as of high quality, ruggedness, supported by reasonable cabin space and good ergonomically designed driver controls. Selection of plastics used for the dashboard and other parts of the cabin, highly detailed steering wheel and classy controls with plenty of leather in the luxury models excel this utility to place that very few have previously achieved. There is plenty of storage space, supported by a modern suspension design that again introduces alternative not previously offered on any other utility enabling for the standard pallets to be loaded sideways. In general, this vehicle will offer fresh new approach to utility pick up, providing some level of innovation with clever and tasteful design for those in the market for a new utility but undecide where to spend their hard earn dollars.
