Going Greener; Volkswagen recent introduction of updated fifth generation three door Polo is claimed to deliver 24% reduction in fuel consumption. Its 1.6l 66kw diesel engine with seven speed DSG auto transmission returned figures of just 4.6 l/100km whilst the all new 1.2 litre petrol brother delivered 5.4 l/100km. The later is available in DSG automatic transmission or 5 or 6 speed manual versions. There is also 1.6 litre version with added performance. Priced from $16,990 all the way up to $24,850 for top of the line it offers six airbags (twin front, side and curtain airbags), pre-tensioners and belt force limiters seatbelt for front occupants, EDL – electronic differential lock, ASR – anti slip regulation, ABS and EBD and ESP electronic stability program as standard inclusions in the safety category achieving 5 star ANCAP rating. Power from the 1.2 l TSI is rated at 77kW with 175Nm followed by 1.4 l Petrol with 63kW and 132Nm. In diesel form the 1.6l Turbo diesel delivers 66kW and 230Nm of power.
Standard equipments provides its occupants with HSA – hill start assist with DSG or manual versions, Auxiliary input MP3 compatible CD player, electrically heated and adjustable exterior mirrors with integrated LED turn indicators and power front and rear windows. There are three optional interior packages. Comfort package available in Trendline variant includes automatic climate control, auto dimming rear view mirror, MFD – multi function display, automatic rain-sensing wipers and multi function leather steering wheel. Comfort package available in Comfort petrol and diesel variants 77TSI and 66TDI offers automatic climate control, auto dimming rear view mirror, low tyre pressure and auto rain-sensing wipers. Sport package that is also only available in 77TSI and 66TDI offers automatic climate control, 17” Boavista Alloy Wheels with 215/40 R17 tyres, dark tinted rear side window and rear window glass, front fog lights with static cornering function, low tyre pressure indicator and lowered sports suspension. Interior build quality and design is distinctively Volkswagen, with great functionality and upmarket feel, especially with the larger LCD screen. Option list will cover items such as GPS satellite navigation through optional RCD 510 audio system that includes TFT touch screen display and 6 disc CD changer with MP3 compatibility and SD card slot, media-in connectivity enabling USB connectivity and Apple iPod compatibility, Alcantara/leatherette upholstery with heated front sports seats and choice of 16” or 17” alloy wheels. To sum it up 5 generation Polo can only be described as effective, innovative well designed package for those wanting that little extra.
