In today’s used car market under Sports car category, one great looking car with muscle to prove it just cannot be ignored. We are talking about 1991-2002 Toyota Supra. Although not released locally, quite a few found its way to our shores through selected authorised distribution outlets under government improvised Grey imports scheme. Toyota Supra was available in twin turbo or NA form with 6 speed manual or 5 speed automatic transmission for pre-2001 models with auto only from 2001. Most popular imported version were represented by mighty turbo variant due to its incredible performance capability, offering reasonably priced performance alternative. Capable of sub 5 seconds delivery with 250km/hr top speed it’s no wonder this car manages to maintain huge following, especially with the younger generation. Initial imports were quite expensive, placing the car out of reach for majority of petrol headed followers, however, as time progressed and with increased availability, the average selling price adjusted to more affordable sub $25,000 range. Fitted with famous JZA-80, originally derived from 2JZ-GTV in-line 6 with VVTi technology and used from 1997 onwards, is quite capable of delivering substantial power delivery with little help from aftermarket tuners. Although, it’s highly recommended to look for unmolested version when buying used Toyota Supra to avoid unexpected problems, often caused by inexperienced modifiers. Turbocharged version power was rated at 330Hp at 5650rpms with 320Nm at 4000rpms. Fitted with ABS, Traction control and limited slip differential inline with sport tuned suspension the car handling capability more than equaled its blistering performance. On the inside, dual front airbags, Power Steering, Electric Windows , Air Conditioning plus remote central locking with anti-theft option were included as part of the standard equipment. From reliability point used Supra with its JZA-80 bulletproof engine offers reasonable reliabilityassuming that it has been regularly services by authorised Toyota Dealership according to manufacturer recommendation. Also the car should be inspected for major bodywork repairs as poor repair work could spell out trouble.
To new owners, well looked after used Toyota Supra can still be very rewarding, especially after all this years, mainly due to its revolutionary design matched by incredible performance.
