Subaru decision to increase WRX external width of the car in-line with STI dimensions has been appraised by many, welcoming back the return of bulged outside guards that clearly separate it from standard Impreza. Previously, and for untrained eye, some close examination was required to spot the difference between standard Impreza and WRX. Not anymore. The all-new MY11 WRX matured to what WRX should have looked like from the start. Apart from some cosmetic surgery as advised in our earlier WRX coverage most obvious changes come in the form of muscled up side guards helping not only to elevate overall sport appeal but adding to improved road handling and performance.

Here is the lowdown;
Front wheels track width increased by 35mm whilst rear grew even more adding further 5mm to the rear track span. Furthermore, WRX benefited from enhanced suspension tuning including suspension bushes transplant from its STI donor to further improve cornering and braking stability. With added new set of 17×8”alloys and wider rubber and optional 18” overall improvement from the recalibrated suspension settings can only be described as polished to what was already regarded as superb. To keep this performance animal recognisable from its more aggressive sibling, STI, rear spoiler on the sedan is considerably smaller. In addition, WRX is equipped with 5-speed manual mated to slightly de-tuned 2.5 litre boxer turbocharged engine.
However, at 39,990, full 20K less than STI, who is complaining? Perhaps only those WRX drivers that experienced traffic light challenge from its WRX STI counterpart, hoping to never experience it again.
