Long awaited arrival of MY11 Subaru WRX and Subaru WRX STi is finally over. Previously the biggest difference separating the two cars was STI wide body treatment giving it more aggressive look instantly identifiable as STI variant. That is no longer the case as standard WRX has also been given the same treatment to enhance its external image in line with its already exceptional performance. The biggest news from Subaru will be the addition of automatic in its global WRX line up which will include Australia with inclusion of STI sedan variant expected to arrive towards the end of the year. Powered by 2.5 Litre Boxer Turbocharged engine specifically tuned for both variants capable of developing 195kW of power with 345Nm of torque in WRX form further boosted to 225kW and 410Nm to accommodate more demanding STI faithfuls. Automatic STI torque modest rewind is there to protect the automatic transmission from huge power stresses. Engine power delivery is channelled through WRX five speed manual gearbox that is currently the only option for the 2011 WRX. However, WRX STI is available with six speed manual gearbox or 5-speed automatic transmission with steering mounted paddle shifter at no extra cost and that is something worth celebrating.

Suspension on the WRX received further tune to accommodate for wider wheel track dropping it by additional 5mm. This also enhanced overall stability of the vehicle especially during cornering and braking. Cosmetic treatment included revised front and rear bumper, front grill, large rear spoiler for sedan and new alloy wheels. Exhaust received inclusion of new twin stainless steel outlets poking out from the rear under body. Inside, Subaru interior colour darker approach seems to be working, adding to more elegant yet sporty appeal. Apart from Bluetooth connectivity USB port has also been included making this 2011 version IPod compatible. Priced from $39,990 for WRX 5 speed manual can also be optioned with Leather interior, Satellite Navigation and sunroof for additional $4,000. 2011 STI will set you back $59,990. Spec R with Satellite Navigation is $6,000 more with Recaro Seats option for additional $1,000. In addition, if all of that was not enough 2011 WRX STI is cheaper than the outgoing model with free optional upgrade to five speed automatic transmission with paddleshifter.
