Peugeot RCZ coupe; It has been three years since first introduced to public at the Frankfurt Motor Show Peugeot RCZ where it has been displayed as a concept car.
Estimated to arrive in Australia in August 2010, pricing is yet to be verified, but early speculations suggest it will be priced around Audi TT. It is expected for RCZ to demand around $60K for the basic model whilst adding further $10K for 146kW upper spec variant. Our sources tell us that RCZ will be priced lower then Audi TT in Europe to give it more competitive advantage. There will also be a 2.0l diesel version available here in Australia. Reasonable level of equipment with plenty of chrome on the inside looks upmarket and in line with its European competitors. Its no surprise the dashboard is shared with Peugeot 308 as the car underpinning is based on the same platform as 308 using the same wheelbase and suspension components with hydraulic assisted rack and pinion steering. However, it is fitted with optional in-dash satellite navigation system and centre fitted classy analogue clock with Peugeot latest centre console switchgear providing high quality finish that almost matches that of an Audi TT. Front seats offer plenty of adjustments and support for front occupants. Rears will only accommodate very small child but can be folded down increasing the overall luggage capacity. Peugeot RCZ will be offered with three different engines. Starting with 1.6 litre 4 cylinder unit with 6 speed manual developing 115kW of power. Next in line sits 1.6 litre direct injection DOHC 16v Turbo with 6 speed manual with power figures of 146kW and 275Nm. Diesel 2.0 litre Turbo version with six speed manual developing reasonable 149kW of power. Diesel version is now famous for its 2010 Nurburgring 24hr race results finishing 1st and 3rd in the D1T diesel category. Six speed Automatic option will only be offered in 1.6 litre entry level variant. With its relatively light weight of just 1290kg and with 146kW (petrol model) of power the RCZ will cover the distance to 100km/h in reasonable 7.5s. Turbo petrol RCZ version will also benefit from bigger front brakes hidden behind 18” alloy wheels with 235/45R rubber. Its well balanced chassis provides tons of grip further assisted by RCZ Electronic stability and traction control. Steering is sharp and responsive yet touch heavy when compared within the class. Its sleek roof slope design with thick A pillars would probably be the only set back restricting some cornering visibility. Safety package will include 4 airbags (front and side), ABS, TC, EBD and ESP which is now relatively standard across the automotive industry. When it arrives to Australia it is sure to cause some havoc in medium sports car category introducing yet another alternative cars that looks great from just about any angle. Pricing may prove to be its biggest obstacle to gain traction within this competitive marketplace.
