Rumours or speculation about the new SLM AMG mid engine super car that is to fill the gap in Mercedes arsenal in direct competition with Audi R8 and yet to be released BMW Efficient Dynamics coupe are quickly turning into reality.
“M” after the SL stands for mid engine configuration in Mercedes SL / SLS range. AMG division previously focused on creating more powerful road version of smaller front engine SLS super car powered by front mounted V8 engine that was later dropped as Mercedes realised such vehicle would have be inappropriate based on overall sales data research. It was also considered to be to close the SL range.
First indications hints an all alloy frame probably powered by smaller V8 or V8/Hybrid or high Output V6 that is scheduled to be released later this year. AMG research suggests that to satisfy their future new owners of such vehicles whilst going forward new SLM AMG or any other AMG creations needs to be environmentally responsible and socially acceptable.
Its unclear what engine configuration will be followed by AMG but if the above is the new direction even smaller more fuel efficient V8 or V6 or Hybrid compatible power plants might be selected.
Looking at the images and considering the use of alloy frame, weight reduction is a clear indication what AMG is also trying to achieve with this car.
Hybrid technology is also a possibility, probably borrowing from SLS eDrive system.
